'The first smile': Akron schools bridge language gaps for students (fox8.com) — Akron Public Schools is leaning on a team of 30 interpreters to help more than 10% of its 19,000 students who are learning English feel welcomed, understood, and able to succeed. Interpreters like Susana Iriarte support students and parents in multiple languages, adapt curriculum with teachers, and build trusting relationships that help families navigate school life across Akron's 43 schools.
   

2. 10 units on scene of Akron fire on Nieman, Stone streets (kentucky.com) — A fully involved residential fire between two houses near Stone and Nieman streets in Akron drew 14 fire units Tuesday afternoon, sending fumes toward nearby Summa Health but not triggering an evacuation. Crews had begun clearing the scene by 2 p.m., and officials say more details about damage and any injuries will be released as they become available.
   

3. Akron Community Foundation awards grants for Summit County nonprofits (kentucky.com) — Akron residents will see millions in new investment as Akron Community Foundation awards $4.4 million to local nonprofits, parks, schools and neighborhood projects, including a new giraffe exhibit at the Akron Zoo. Dozens of Akron-based groups, from Keep Akron Beautiful to the Akron Marathon and North Hill CDC, are receiving operating and capital support that will shape services, green space and economic development across the city.
   

4. 15+ Things to Do in Cleveland This Weekend (Sept. 24-27) (clevescene.com) — Akron-area entertainment fans have several options this Sept. 24-27, including Tracy Lawrence and a recovery-focused concert with Marc Lee Shannon at the Akron Civic Theatre and a true-crime talk at Goodyear Theater. The broader roundup also highlights major concerts, comedy shows, festivals and sports across Greater Cleveland, Cuyahoga Falls and Northeast Ohio for a busy fall weekend.
