📰 News we're reading

1. Summit County offers tax relief for property damaged by Sept. 4 storms (cleveland.com) — If your Akron or Summit County home was damaged in the Sept. 4 storms, you may qualify for a temporary reduction in your property's appraised value and lower 2027 tax bills. The Fiscal Office is accepting Form DTE 26 applications through Dec. 31, with staff inspecting damage and offering help by phone, email, or mail from their downtown Akron office.

2. University of Akron Police bring back campus bike patrol for the first time since 2018 (news5cleveland.com) — Students and neighbors around the University of Akron will see more officers on bicycles again, as campus police revive their bike patrol to boost visibility and access. Funded by donors, the new mountain bikes help officers quietly reach areas cars can't, with students saying the patrols feel more approachable and could help deter crimes like car break-ins.

3. Grammy-winning musician Ray LaMontagne collapses on stage during Nashville concert (fox8.com) — Ray LaMontagne, who recently collapsed on stage in Nashville due to heat-related dehydration, is scheduled to bring his Trouble 20th Anniversary Tour to the Akron Civic Theatre on Sept. 16. Fans in Akron can expect the show to go on as planned, with his team reporting he's recovering well and grateful for supporters' understanding after the incident.

4. Bernie Moreno proposes federal tax to offset state data-center incentives (cleveland.com) — A proposed federal tax from Sen. Bernie Moreno could effectively cancel out Ohio's generous tax breaks for data centers, including incentives tied to an Ark Data Centers expansion in Akron. The plan would charge companies a federal tax equal to any state or local incentive they receive, raising questions about future subsidies, electricity use, and job creation tied to such projects.
