Here's Why Avon Lake Spent $205,000 On The Moore Road Property

Officials were worried that other interested buyers would sit on the property for years without investing in it.

AVON LAKE, OH — After the city announced it had purchased a parcel of land on Moore Road at auction, and intended to prime the site for redevelopment, many residents wanted to know what Avon Lake officials had in mind for the area. Now a key city official has weighed in.

Ted Esborn, the economic development director, told Patch, "what we most want to see is new investment in that area. The south side of Lake Road between Moore Rd. and the Artstown Plaza is of great historical significance to Avon Lake — before I-90 it was the downtown area for the City."

The property purchased by the city is 110 Moore Road, which was previously the Smith & Smith law offices. The city bid $205,000 for the property at the Lorain County Sheriff's auction.

Esborn wants to help prime the area for investment and redevelopment. The name of the game is revitalization.

"The new Caslon tavern is a great example of new investment, as is the City’s new Anchor recreation facility in the plaza," Esborn said. "We purchased the property now because a sheriff sale was a one-time opportunity to control that part of the area — we had to either jump on it or see it go to an owner who would sit on it for years or decades. Now that we control it, we can use it to attract that new investment that Avon Lake wants so much."
