Schools Are Experimenting With AI With Little Evidence or Policy to Guide Them (savannahherald.com) — Dayton Public Schools have been piloting an AI chatbot called Jordan with alternative-school students, spending more than $70,000 last year and renewing the contract for this year. Local leaders say the tool helps students open up emotionally, while outside experts and other districts warn that schools are experimenting with AI without clear evidence, metrics, or strong state and federal guidance.
   

2. DeWine signs House Bill 519 targeting electronic key-programming devices used in thefts (dayton247now.com) — A new Ohio law, House Bill 519, is now in effect and gives Dayton police tougher penalties to use against thieves who steal cars with electronic key-programming devices. Dayton Police Chief Eric Henderson says local vehicle thefts have surged in recent years, especially targeting Kia and Hyundai models, and urges residents to lock cars, remove valuables, and immediately report any thefts to 911 or 333-COPS.
   

3. Cat Named 'Booger' Vanishes for Six Years Until His Mom Recognizes One Sick Shelter Cat Online (greatergood.com) — A Dayton woman was finally reunited with her missing black cat, Booger, six years after he disappeared, thanks to a viral post from the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. Shelter staff had spent months nursing the elderly, critically ill cat—known to them as Eugene—back to health before the online photos helped his original owner recognize him and bring him home again.
   

4. October Arts Off 75: Seasonal Treats & Studio Tours (thinktv.org) — Dayton-area art lovers can dive into October with the FotoFocus Biennial and the 2026 Dayton Studio Tour, which lets you visit working artists' studios and then gather at The Contemporary Dayton for an after-party. The roundup also spotlights upcoming performances like Dayton Contemporary Dance Company's "Spectra" and Human Race Theatre's "Salem: Blood to Drink," plus regional arts events along the I-75 corridor.
   

5. Thomas Lee Shepherd (85) (mycountylink.com) — Family and friends in the Dayton-area community are mourning Thomas Lee Shepherd, 85, who passed away at Miami Valley Hospital after a brief illness. A Navy veteran and longtime Ansonia resident, he will be honored with full military services Saturday in Greenville, followed by burial in Ansonia Cemetery, with memorial contributions suggested to the Ansonia Rescue Squad.
