I've quit hundreds of times...it's easy! Ask any smoker who's tried to quit, and they'll tell you the same thing. So as I sit here and ponder how I'm going to get this beloved monkey off my back, let's look back at some of the strategies that haven't worked. The first time I tried to end my habit was when I was in my late twenties. I noticed that after a long night of drinking and smoking, I would convince a nice gal to come home with me, only to have her call EMS because she thought I was going into defib. Definately time to quit. The fact that smoking can cause serious problems in the sack is one warning they forgot to put on the side of my pack of Marlboros. So I tried to quit "cold turkey." No help, no nothing, just quit. I found myself golfing...alot. I became a regular down at Little
Met, doing nine holes at least once a day. That caused its own problems, since I suck at golf and when I get frustrated, I want a cigarette. Ultimately, it was the concern for the health of
others that got me to give up. Once at Big Met, I got paired up with two high school girls. I warned then that not only were my skills non-existent, that they should stand behind me when I tee off. I guess they thought that being perpendicular to the tee was safe. They would be wrong. When I nearly took the one girl's head off with my drive, I figured it was time to give up golf and go back to cigarettes. I switched to Marlboro Lights. Everybody's happy.
I also tried accupuncture. My co-workers at the time thought it might work, so I paid my $35.00 and went with them. The doctor said about half the people he treats quit smoking for good and there was four of us, so the odds weren't the greatest, but I was focused on the $35.00 so I gave it a decent chance. Wrong.
