Marietta fun fact of the day:
Marietta's black community was well established before the Civil War. By 1860 the community was large enough to organize its own African Methodist Church. By the late 1890s there was a section of Marietta referred to as "Africa," and one local newspaper carried a column of news for "Colored Folks."

Here are the top stories for today:
1. The DORA opens up in Marietta today. Folks looking to get their drink on outdoors can do so in Marietta tonight. The designated outdoor refreshment area will be active downtown from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Patch)
2. The school bomb threat suspect has been arraigned in Washington County. Nicholas Hall is being held on $2,000,000 bond. (Patch)
3. The Washington County Commissioners are calling on state leaders in Columbus to help fund Washington County's Devola sewer project. (Patch)
4. Ohio passes a fireworks bill. The state Senate just passed a bill to allow the public to possess, and discharge consumer-grade fireworks. This now goes to the State House. If signed into law, folks would be allowed to set off fireworks during certain holiday periods. (Cleveland.com)
5. Music in the park was canceled this week due to weather. They will resume their concert series next Thursday. (WTAP)

- First Friday: Art Walk. Marietta Main Street will be holding their First Friday event downtown. This will be a celebration of the community for locals, tourists, and area groups to show off the beautiful downtown of Marietta. More details here.

A little about me, I'm Chris Schmitt; I grew up in Marietta, went to Marietta High School, and graduated from Ohio University's Scripps School of Journalism.
