Bomb And Shooting Threats, Congressman Censured, Fireman Mourned

In today's Marietta Morning, we look at a number of threats facing Waterford, a GOP Congressman punished, and a firefighter laid to rest.

Waterford schools were dismissed for false bomb threats and shooting claims: Zach Shrivers of WTAP reports that Waterford schools have been plagued with threats over the past couple of days. There was a false bomb threat on Thursday called into Waterford High School. Later there was a call claiming there was an active shooter on the grounds, this was followed by another bomb threat. Waterford Elementary and High Schools went into lockdown, and at 11:30 Friday students were dismissed for the day. These incidents are under investigation.

Republican Congressman from Ohio is censured for voting to impeach Trump: Jo Ingles of the Statehouse News Bureau reports that the Ohio Republican Party's State Central Committee voted to censure Congressman Anthony Gonzalez. The Cleveland area Republican broke ranks earlier this year when he voted to impeach former President Donald Trump claiming he incited violence. The GOP committee also called on Gonzalez to resign. He's being primaried next year by two candidates, one of whom is backed by Trump himself.

Athens County firefighter mourned: Zach Shrivers of WTAP reports that a beloved senior firefighter is laid to rest. Just last weekend 38-year-old Jeff Armes of the Nelsonville Fire Department passed away while battling a blaze. His funeral was held on Friday in Logan, Ohio. He was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

Marietta College wrap-up track and field tournament: On Friday, the Marietta College women's track and field team came in 6th overall in the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship. The men tied for 7th. There were a couple of standouts. Alex Dimon won two OAC titles, he came in first in the 110-meter hurdle event, and he also won the 400-meter hurdle event. Laura Pullins won the women's high jump with a jump of 1.71 meters, tieing the school record. Marietta will return to the track on Friday for the Harrison Dillard Twilight meet.
