Since the Revolutionary War, the American soldier has served as the guardian at the gate of freedom and protector of the values we hold dear. The first Memorial Day (then called Decoration Day) was celebrated shortly after the Civil War ended. On May 5, 1868, General John Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, promulgated General Order No. 11, which officially established Memorial Day.

In 1923, shortly before he ascended to the presidency, then Vice President Calvin Coolidge stressed the importance of American ideals and the sacrifices required to protect them in a speech titled "The Destiny of America". In that speech, he paid tribute to America's fallen heroes and Memorial Day, explaining that we set the day apart "to do honor to all those, now gone, who made the cause of America their supreme choice." Coolidge also quoted John 15:13: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

I hope that as you spend time with friends and family this weekend, you also remember and honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms, as well of thinking of those in uniform stationed at home and around the world today.
