Congressman Johnson Votes, Peoples Bank, Mtta Property

In today's Marietta Morning we look at a couple of our Congressman's latest votes, Peoples Bank Q1 results, and Marietta blighted properties

Congressman Johnson enters two yea votes in Washington: On Monday, Congressman Bill Johnson, who represents much of Southeast Ohio, voted yea on a couple of bills. The first was to condemn the continued violation of rights and freedoms of the people of Hong Kong by the Chinese government. He also voted yea on the SAFE Banking Act. This would make it easier for legal cannabis businesses to interact with financial institutions.

Peoples Bank makes its first-quarter announcement: This week the bank announced its first-quarter 2021 results. Peoples reported a net income of $15,500,000 for the first quarter of 2021. Peoples Bank President and CEO Chuck Sulerzyski says the year is off to a great start. He says the economy is improving and he believes that this paired with a couple of major acquisitions they've already announced will be very good for them in the coming quarters.

Properties on Gilman Avenue declared public nuisances: Janelle Patterson of the Marietta Times reports that the properties at 115 and 117 Gilman Avenue were declared blights and public nuisances in court this week. These properties are very close to Harmar Elementary School. City officials are set to meet on Thursday to consider bids for demolition, and a timeline to take care of these blighted properties.

Congressman Steve Stivers won't run for U.S. Senate: Zach Shrivers of WTAP reports that Southeast Ohio Congressman Steve Shrivers will not be trying to replace Senator Rob Portman in 2022. Shrivers announced this week that he would be resigning in about a month to become President and CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. He says he'll still be able to do what he loves in Columbus, but stay closer to home.
