Post World War II Marietta was a very different scene. Marietta College enrollment jumped from 170 to 1,229 between 1944 and 1947. Former soldiers taking advantage of their GI bill reshaped a lot of college life for some time. The college didn't know where to put them, they got 20 trailers built 12 barracks, and 7 apartment buildings. A former Coast Guard boat was used for housing at one point. Many of those returning from the war took their studies more seriously and rejected juvenile activities like fraternities and hazing.
