📰 News we're reading

1. Advocates push for expanded Toledo passenger rail service (13abc.com) — Passenger rail advocates are in downtown Toledo this weekend pushing for more frequent, daytime train service that could better connect Toledo with cities like Detroit and Cleveland. They say federal infrastructure funding and strong local support are crucial, with any new route likely years away but potentially transformative for travel, affordability, and economic growth in Toledo.

2. Dana Marie Slay, 1959-2026: Toledo police officer 'had special connection with young people' (toledoblade.com) — Toledo is remembering Officer Dana Marie Slay, the city's longest-serving police officer and the first Black woman to hold Badge No. 1, who died Sept. 26 at age 67. Friends and colleagues praise her deep connection with local youth, and residents can pay respects at visitation and funeral services this Friday and Saturday at Southern Missionary Baptist Church.

3. Toledo firefighter says he had to 'gnaw' his way free after being handcuffed, 911 call reveals (13abc.com) — A Toledo firefighter is facing abduction and other charges after a fellow firefighter and romantic partner told a friend he escaped handcuffs by gnawing free and later found his car and home allegedly tampered with. A judge set bond at $10,000, ordered an ankle monitor, and barred contact while investigators sort out what happened during the early-morning incident.

4. UToledo student makes life-saving donation to stranger in need (13abc.com) — A University of Toledo sophomore and marching band member recently flew to Florida to donate life-saving blood stem cells to a man in his sixties battling a rare blood cancer. After joining the National Marrow Donor Program from campus, he quickly matched, completed a simple non-surgical donation, and hopes to meet the recipient next year while encouraging more Toledo-area residents to register.

5. ODOT study shows overwhelming benefits of U.S. 23/I-71 connector, Toledo groups say (toledoblade.com) — State transportation officials say a new US 23/I-71 connector could significantly cut travel time and crashes between Toledo and Columbus, with a study showing a six-to-one benefit-to-cost ratio. Toledo-area business and planning leaders are urging lawmakers to find funding—possibly including tolls or higher gas taxes—for the billion-dollar project, which could start around 2035 and reshape regional traffic and commerce.
