1. Karen Emily Hakel (bgindependentmedia.org) — A longtime Toledo resident, lawyer, and art lover, Karen Emily Hakel passed away peacefully at home on September 24. After a distinguished legal and federal career, she retired to Toledo, where she led at the Toledo Museum of Art, stayed active with Metroparks, and remained deeply involved in civic and arts communities cherished by many locals.
   

2. Trial date set for man accused of fatal shooting outside St. Paul's last December (wtol.com) — A man accused in the fatal downtown Toledo shooting of Andrew Shively near 13th and Madison is set for trial Nov. 16 in Lucas County Common Pleas Court. Toledo police say the December 2025 incident followed an argument outside St. Paul's Community Center, and the suspect was later arrested in Detroit with help from multiple agencies.
   

3. Toledo to host National Rail Conference focused on future of passenger rail (dayton247now.com) — Toledo will host RailNation Toledo from October 2–4 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza Amtrak Station, bringing federal, state, and local transportation leaders to discuss the future of Midwest passenger rail. Residents can join a public "Science Fair" on October 2 featuring an Amtrak locomotive simulator, TARTA Bus Rapid Transit VR experience, and facility tours, with a single-day Friday pass costing $20.
   

4. Toledo shelters warn of looming winter crisis as capacity runs out (13abc.com) — Toledo's homeless shelters are already at or near capacity, and local leaders warn that without funding for 45 usual winter crisis beds, more than 100 additional people could be left without safe overnight shelter. The Toledo Lucas County Homelessness Board and a city council member are urging churches, union halls, and community centers to help expand warming centers before freezing weather hits.
   

5. Lucas County health officials track measles exposure after Amtrak passenger diagnosed (13abc.com) — Lucas County health officials are monitoring possible measles exposures after an infected Amtrak passenger arrived at the Toledo station on Sept. 13, prompting active daily check-ins and quarantines for some contacts. A few exposed Toledo-area residents remain under 21-day monitoring through Oct. 5, and officials are closely watching for any fevers, rashes, or respiratory symptoms.
