Lee Burneson Lady Demons Shine in Championship Win

Many of the seventh and eighth grade runners beat their personal bests to win their second consecutive SWC championship.

It feels like déjà vu.

Earlier this month, the boys football team won their second consecutive Southwestern Conference championship title, and the junior lady demons took note.

Last week, the seventh and eighth grade girls cross country team matched the feat.

At the SWC championship invitation at Lorain County Community College, five girls (Maya Bauer, 5th; Robyn Haddman, 6th; Danielle Pellegrino, 9th; Michelle Appel, 12th; Taylor Hood, 13th) finished in the top 15. Many beat their personal bests to place as high as they did, said head coach Mary Rehor.

“We are happy for our Coach Rehor and our girls at the middle school as they continue to bring home SWC championships,” athletic director Tony Cipollone said. “Their hard work and dedication has been rewarded and we look forward to many of them continuing their athletic and academic careers at the high school and hopefully competing for many years to come for more SWC championships.”

The road to gold wasn’t an easy one though, Rehor explained. Given the record rainfall, many of the courses were water-logged with the girls running and trudging through mud and loose soil to cross the finish line.

“The girls did a great job working together as a team, pushing each other and themselves and overcoming adversity such as injuries and inclement weather,” she said.

“They are a wonderful group of girls to work with, with a bunch of talent and potential.”
