1. Is it time for Youngstown schools to be released from academic distress status? (ideastream.org) — Youngstown City School District has finally met Ohio's state standards, earning three stars overall on the latest report card and prompting calls to end its long-running "academic distress" status. Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor highlights record graduation rates and gains in readiness and gap closing, while acknowledging ongoing challenges like high chronic absenteeism that the district is still working to address.

2. Combating infant mortality in Mahoning County (wfmj.com) — A $15,000 grant is helping fund an infant mortality summit in Youngstown, where local and state health leaders are focusing on improving prenatal and early-child care access for Mahoning County families. While infant mortality rates have inched down, Youngstown health officials say more community education, managed-care support, and coordinated resources are needed to keep local babies and mothers healthier.

3. Week-long calendar of events planned for 'Nonviolence Week' in Youngstown (wfmj.com) — Youngstown residents can look forward to a full Ohio Nonviolence Week schedule from October 4–10, with nearly every day offering a local event you can attend. From the downtown parade and rally to art, poetry, lectures, and a final community discussion on nonviolence, most activities are free or low-cost and centered around familiar Youngstown venues.

4. Howland Library shuts its doors for $2.2M expansion project: What patrons need to know (mahoningmatters.com) — If you rely on the Howland branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, plan ahead: the building is now closed until spring 2027 for a $2.2 million expansion. Nearby Youngstown-area residents can still return items in the outdoor drop box, at other Warren-Trumbull branches, or on the Bookmobile while crews add new children's, teen, and study spaces and upgrade the building's infrastructure.

5. Youngstown employees raise more than $8K for Air Reserve Station Airmen, families (mahoningmatters.com) — Greenwood Chevrolet employees in the Youngstown area raised $8,370 this summer through weekly R.E.D. Friday donations to support Airmen and families at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station. With help from a matching donor, the money will stay local, funding morale and family programs for members of the 910th Airlift Wing community, including those currently deployed.
