Astoria Library Friends Association looking to expand hours, calling on volunteers to help (dailyastorian.com) — Astoria’s library bookshop wants to expand beyond its limited Saturday hours and needs local volunteers to make it happen. The Astoria Library Friends Association will host a July 7 orientation, with volunteers helping run low-cost book sales that fund teen art workshops, community panels, and special children’s materials at the Astoria Public Library.

2. Meet Astoria Visual Arts' new resident artist (discoverourcoast.com) — Astoria Visual Arts has named new resident artist John Crockett-Person, who recently moved to Astoria and will work at the Astoria Studio Collective through December. He’ll develop an interactive project called The Monster Monologues and open his studio during Second Saturday Artwalks, giving locals regular chances to see new work and connect with the city’s arts community.

3. Oregon Tech Awarded National Park Service Grant to Develop Accessible Mobile Media About War of 1812 at Fort Astoria (oit.edu) — A new $200,000 National Park Service grant will help transform Fort Astoria into an immersive, audio-guided experience that’s fully accessible to blind and low-vision visitors. Working with the City of Astoria, the Chinook Indian Nation, and local partners, Oregon Tech researchers will co-create mobile audio stories about the fort’s complex War of 1812 history, available both on-site and online.

4. Horse Feathers Announce Words Are Dead 20th Anniversary Reissue & Tour (stereogum.com) — Horse Feathers are reissuing their 2006 debut Words Are Dead and bringing the anniversary tour to Astoria’s Liberty Theater on August 28. The Portland indie-folk band’s refreshed lineup will play material from the reissue, including early demo tracks, giving local fans a rare chance to hear the album live in a historic downtown venue.

From Brazil and Germany, police dreams come true in Astoria, a land far, far away (dailyastorian.com) — Two new officers, Luis Marone and Bella Byers, have joined the Astoria Police Department after long journeys from Brazil and Germany to the North Coast. Now training for patrol, they’re settling into Astoria life, tackling taser and pepper-spray exercises, and preparing to serve and protect the community they’ve chosen as home.
