📰 News we're reading

1. I-84 Westbound now open Between Baker City and La Grande (elkhornmediagroup.com) — Westbound I-84 between Baker City and La Grande has reopened after a crash that earlier shut the freeway and restricted trucks as far back as Ontario, backing up parking in town. Drivers from Baker City should still expect congestion and local-only access on U.S. 30 as traffic clears through the affected stretch this afternoon.

2. Northeastern Oregon senior lunches: Oct. 1-7, 2026 (eastoregonian.com) — Baker City seniors can get hot lunches Oct. 1–7 at the Baker County Senior Center on Cedar Street, with meals served weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Suggested donations keep costs low for older adults, while set prices apply for younger diners, and similar affordable options are listed for nearby towns if you're visiting friends or family.

3. Trial in Baker City murder case could be delayed (bakercityherald.com) — A Baker City man accused of second-degree murder in a 2025 shooting remains in Baker County Jail after a judge declined to release him before trial. The defense argues prosecutors have not fully shared crime lab evidence, which could delay the January 2027 trial and potentially lead to a future bail hearing affecting this high-profile Baker City case.

4. Truck driver arrested for snorting cocaine while parked in Baker Valley Rest Area (bakercityherald.com) — A Washington truck driver was arrested at the Baker Valley Rest Area along I-84 after reportedly snorting cocaine in his parked rig, based on dashboard camera images reported to Oregon State Police. He faces a misdemeanor cocaine possession charge and is due in Baker County Circuit Court in November, highlighting ongoing enforcement along Baker City's main interstate corridor.
