Forks and first downs: Hermiston Football enjoys team meal before kicking off season with win (northeastoregonnow.com) — Hermiston High School's varsity football team kicked off its season with a big 58-28 home win over Union after sharing a community-sponsored team meal provided by Good Shepherd Health Care System. Players and coaches say the pregame dinners build camaraderie and support from local families and businesses. The Bulldogs now prepare to host a Salute to Service Night at Kennison Field on September 11.
   

2. Community Memorial Service, live butterfly release set for Sept. 12 at Bennett Botanical Gardens (northeastoregonnow.com) — Hermiston residents are invited to a free Community Memorial Service and live butterfly release at Bennett Botanical Gardens on September 12 from 3 to 6 p.m. The event, hosted by Good Shepherd's Vange John Memorial Hospice, offers crafts, kids' activities, and a silent auction supporting bereavement services. Attendees can pre-purchase or buy butterflies on-site to honor loved ones.
   

3. Mosquito control spraying to take place Wednesday near Power City (elkhornmediagroup.com) — Hermiston-area residents are being warned about West Nile-positive mosquitoes as the West Umatilla Mosquito Control District conducts aerial spraying near Power City after sunset Wednesday. The district, which serves Hermiston and nearby towns, will step up control efforts through late September. Locals are urged to remove standing water, use repellents, limit dusk and dawn exposure, and report heavy mosquito activity or dead birds.
   

4. Oregon Guard breaks ground on $12M machine gun range in Boardman (eastoregonian.com) — A new $12 million machine gun range at Boardman's Naval Weapons Systems Training Facility will boost training capacity for Oregon National Guard soldiers and directly support the Rees Training Center near Hermiston. Once finished, Guard units can qualify on heavy weapons in-state instead of traveling to Washington or Idaho, strengthening the region's military role and activity.
