📰 News we're reading

1. Forest manager closes access or privately leases some of its 18,000 acres of property in Lincoln County • Lincoln Chronicle (lincolnchronicle.org) — Access to popular forest roads and trails near Beverly Beach and north of Newport, including areas by Big Creek Reservoir and the airport, has been sharply reduced after timberlands manager Manulife leased some of its 18,000 Lincoln County acres. Locals, hunters, and hikers now face locked gates and no-trespassing signs, while officials say other private timber owners still offer free permits and Manulife hints its new fee-based access program could evolve.

2. Newport Visual Arts Center offers workshops, after-school sessions, open studios starting Saturday • Lincoln Chronicle (lincolnchronicle.org) — Newport residents can dive into a full season of art workshops, after-school sessions, and open studios at the Newport Visual Arts Center starting this Saturday. From indigo dyeing and mushroom painting to clay critters and gilded ornaments, there are options for all ages and skill levels, plus flexible drop-in after-school art days for local kids through May.

3. 11 Budget-Friendly Towns on the Pacific Coast for Retirees (worldatlas.com) — If you live in Newport or are considering retiring there, this guide highlights the city as a "do-everything" coastal hub with a working harbor, hospital, aquarium, and active 60+ center, even if prices run higher than some ports. It compares Newport with other budget-friendly Pacific Coast towns, outlining tradeoffs in housing costs, services, and outdoor amenities retirees might weigh before choosing where to settle.

4. The Oregon Coast Aquarium Is Giving Octopuses Their Own Day This October (thatoregonlife.com) — Families in Newport can mark Thursday, October 8, for a special Octopus Day celebration at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, featuring crafts, a keeper chat, and a collectible trading card. Activities run mostly from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with regular exhibits, touch pools, and optional behind-the-scenes Octopus Encounters rounding out a full day by the bay.

5. A Sunny, Warm Week on Oregon Coast, Highs 70s (beachconnection.net) — Newport is in for a classic "second summer" this week, with sunny skies and coastal highs reaching into the 70s while rain stays away for several days. The National Weather Service expects warmer-than-normal temperatures up and down the Oregon coast and inland, so locals can plan extra beach time or outdoor projects before conditions cool again next week.
