Butterflies Are Free: Oregon Zoo Releases Rare Butterflies

Part of an ongoing conservation effort.

Dozens of rare Taylor checkerspot butterflies were released by the Oregon Zoo into the skies over the grasslands by Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.

The zoo had raised the 79 butterflies from tiny eggs.

The grass prairie by the military base is one of the few remaining areas where the butterflies live.

The zoo has been working with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to raise the butterflies.

To get the 79 that were released, nearly 1,500 caterpillars were placed at a nearby site.
