Help Oregon Food Bank Stamp Out Hunger on May 14

Canned food left near mailboxes will be collected by letter carriers, volunteers

Oregon Food Bank is asking for the community’s support on May 14 as we join letter carriers for the Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Hosted by the National Association of Letter Carriers, Stamp Out Hunger is the largest single-day food drive in Oregon.

You can take part by collecting nonperishable food items and leaving them in a bag near the mailbox on May 14. A letter carrier or volunteer will pick up the donation and ensure it gets to Oregon Food Bank. Last year more than 1.1 million pounds were collected in Oregon and Clark County, Washington. This year’s goal is 1.3 million. All donated food stays in the community where it was collected.

“Too many people in our community struggle to get enough to eat. We are grateful to everyone who participates and the hundreds of letter carriers who give their time to make this event happen,” said Oregon Food Bank CEO Susannah Morgan.

“Wells Fargo has sponsored and volunteered for this event for many years. It has become one of our largest employee volunteer activities in Oregon and S.W. Washington,” said Tracy Curtis, Wells Fargo’s Oregon Region president. “We especially like the fact that all the food stays in the local communities where it was donated. We do all we can to help out our neighbors.”

A list of most wanted foods is available at http://www.oregonfoodbank.org/Organize-a-Food-Drive/Most-Wanted-Foods. However, for this event, we are unable to accept food items in glass containers. Donations not picked up by letter carriers can be dropped off at any post office by Wednesday, May 18.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive was created in 1993 by the National Association of Letter Carriers to encourage communities to come together in an effort to stock the shelves of food banks nationwide. Along with the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, the National Association of Letter Carriers has collected over one billion pounds of food nationally since the drive’s inception over 20 years ago.

The food drive is made possible by your local letter carriers, the U.S. Postal Service, Wells Fargo, KOIN-TV and many volunteers and community organizations.
