New Census Numbers Show Portland Area Growing

Portland now the 26th largest city in the country, passing Baltimore and Oklahoma City. Growth everywhere from Wilsonville to Gresham.

The numbers don't lie.

Portland and it's surrounding area is hot.

Numbers released Thursday by the United States Census Bureau show that Portland and pretty much every community around it has had substantial growth in recent years.

The numbers - which are population estimates for the end of 2015 - have Portland continuing to be the state's largest city, with a population of 632,309.

In 2010, the last time the full census was done, the city's population was 583,776.

Portland gained nearly 12,000 new residents last year - roughly 33 people each and every day.

That helped the city leapfrog Baltimore and Oklahoma City to become the 26th largest in the country.

Portland wasn't alone when it came to growth.

Gresham continues to be Oregon's second largest city with 110,109 people followed by Hillsboro in third with 102,347.

Beaverton is poised to be the next member of the 100,000-resident club. The city has 96,577 people.

Lake Oswego has grown by about five percent over the past five years to 38,496 while Oregon City grew by nearly 10 percent to 35,831 residents over the same period.

Wilsonville has grown by about 15 percent over the past five years and now has nearly 23,000 residents.
