#OregonStandoff Latest: Lawyers for Ammon Bundy Fight Back Against Secrecy Order

Lawyers for Ammon Bundy want to keep using social media to help fight their case.

In court papers filed Tuesday, one of the lawyers for Ammon Bundy say they want to keep using social media to help fight for their client.

Mike Arnold and Lissa Casey have been going to the internet, using social media to help track down leads as they defend their client against federal charges stemming from the armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge earlier this year.

Their filing was in anticipation of a hearing Wednesday morning before the Federal Judge overseeing the case.

Bundy is one of more than two dozen people charged in the case so far.

Bundy's lawyers are arguing against an order from Judge Anna Brown that says while information turned over by prosecutors to defense lawyers can be shared with their clients, the defense lawyers can only also share with their investigators and no one else.

Bundy Protective Order

While defense lawyers can seek exceptions, Bundy's lawyers write that the protective order has "hampered our ability to defend Mr. Bundy in a way that ensures he receives a speedy and fair trial."

They say the order has a chilling effect on what they call their volunteer paralegals.

Buddy's lawyers have been posting "CROWDSOURCING ACTION ALERTS" on their Facebook page or webpage seeking information related to the case.

"We need to be able to post information to large groups of people and determine its authenticity, as many of the governments assertions in this case have turned out to be potentially untrue, from accusations of threats of harm, to alleged government cover-ups and misconduct of proportions that should be and are disturbing to the public," Arnold wrote in his filing.

Arnold says that they do not "have a team of FBI agents at our disposal, nor do we have unlimited resources. we do, however, have the power of the people, who are willing to donate their time to help defend Ammon and the other political protesters."
