Portland Harbor Cleanup Plan Will be Released June 8

Announcement will come after years of study and two previous releases dates came and went.

After years of studying how to clean up the toxic pollution in Portland Harbor, the United States Environmental Protection Agency is set to release its game plan.

On June 8th.

That is if they don't delay it again like they have already twice this year. There is a hope to get the plan in place before the end of the year because a change in administration in Washington, D.C. could cause further delays.

Many groups - including the city of Portland - have been anxiously awaiting the plan. Depending on what the EPA asks for, the cost of the cleanup could cost upwards of $2 billion.

The EPA calls it "The Portland Harbor Superfund Site" because "of more than a century of industrial use along the Willamette River."

As a result of the 100 years of contamination, some fish in the harbor "such as bass, carp, and catfish currently pose a health risk to those who eat them."

Once the plan is released, the public will have 60 days to comment.
