Oregon Shark Attack: Warning Signs Go Up After Portland Man Attacked

State Police say it happened Monday afternoon.

Warnings signs are going up around Indian Beach on the Oregon Coast after a man from Portland was attacked by a shark on Monday. The man is at Legacy Emanuel where he was brought in serious condition.

Joseph Tanner, 29, was sitting on his surf board in the Pacific Ocean near Indian Beach just before 4:00 Monday afternoon when he was attacked. It happened within the confines of Ecola State Park.

Tanner had bites on his upper thigh and lower leg. and was transported by ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries.

The warning signs will go up on the beach and the park. The state parks department says the beach and the park will remain open.

The attack on Tanner was the 28th along the Oregon Coast since 1974, according to the respected website, www.sharkattackdata.com. While it's not known what kind of shark attacked Tanner, all attacks where the species of shark was known came from great whites.

OSP troopers from the Astoria Area Command are continuing the investigation.

OSP was assisted at the scene by Cannon Beach Fire Department, Cannon Beach Police Department and the Clatsop County Sheriff's Office.
