Portland Man Dies Climbing South Sister

The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office says that it does not appear his death was suspicious.

A 63-year-old man from Portland died on Tuesday while hiking South Sister, the state's third highest peak.

According to the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, the body of Tom Shakespeare was found by hikers on the South Sister trail. They said he was face down and unresponsive and located about 4.5 miles in on the trail from the Devil's Lake Trail head. He was at an elevation of about 8,417.

The hikers called 9-1-1 and began CPR but Shakespeare was dead.

A trail maintenance technician arrived and agreed to wait until someone from the sheriff's office arrived.

Eventually a sergeant, two deputies and 12 search and rescue volunteers helped bring Shakespeare's body off the mountain.

The sheriff's office says they do not believe his death is suspicious but would still like to contact anyone who may have had contact with him on the mountain.

They are asked to call the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office Special Services Unit at 541-388-6501.
