'Tragic event': Salem-Keizer teacher fired after being charged in deadly hit-and-run (koin.com) — A Salem-Keizer Public Schools teacher has been fired after being arrested in connection with a deadly Aug. 3 hit-and-run that killed a 29-year-old Salem woman and injured a Salem man on 17th Street NE. Salem police say the suspect, found nearby with a high blood alcohol level, faces manslaughter, assault, DUII and related charges, while the district offers condolences to the victim's family.
   

2. Residents in survey question if anyone cares about northeast Salem (statesmanjournal.com) — Northeast Salem residents are voicing deep concerns about crime, homelessness, traffic and neglected streets as the city launches a new "Northeast United" collaboration to tackle those issues. City leaders are expanding a successful downtown public safety framework, funding added staff time, and convening local schools, nonprofits and businesses to coordinate responses, with special outreach planned for Spanish-speaking neighbors.
   

3. $55.5M Salem I-5 project wraps early, saving $1M amid ODOT scrutiny (thenewstribune.com) — Drivers in south Salem will soon see the end of major I-5 construction, as the $55.5 million project adding a third southbound lane between Kuebler and Delaney wrapped early and under budget. Remaining lane closures continue into October while crews finish work, but officials say the expanded highway and new roundabout should ease freight bottlenecks and improve local traffic flow.
   

4. Potential creation of Oregon park near Salem a 'daunting task' – Daily Journal of Commerce (djcoregon.com) — A new state park could soon take shape just northeast of Salem, as Oregon Parks and Recreation moves to buy Abiqua Falls and nearby forestland for $2 million approved by lawmakers. While the purchase would secure long-term public access to the popular waterfall, officials warn that making the rugged site safe and fully developed will be expensive and take years of planning.
   

5. Salem Man Sentenced to 5.5 Years for Abusing Infant Twins as Prosecutor Highlights 'Gap in Oregon Law' (kxl.com) — A 29-year-old Salem man has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for severely abusing his six-week-old twin infants, after doctors at Salem Hospital and OHSU uncovered multiple fractures and injuries. Prosecutors say the case exposes a gap in Oregon law that makes it hard to bring more serious assault charges when non-verbal children cannot describe their pain, and they're urging legislative changes.
