Abington Fire Company Chief Retires After Decades of Service

After serving the community for 20 years as the chief of Abington Fire Company, John Bothwell is retiring. Long-serving Assistant Chief Michael Jones will succeed Bothwell as the company’s next chief.

The retirement and change in leadership took effect during the Feb. 7 Abington Township Board of Commissioners meeting, where Bothwell was honored for his dedication and commitment to the community, and Jones was sworn in as the company’s new leader.

“It has been an extraordinary opportunity serving and protecting Abington Township and its residents over the years,” Bothwell said.

Bothwell began his service as a firefighter with Abington Fire Company in 1967. His interest in emergency services was sparked at an early age by living near the Abington firehouse and his friend’s father, who also volunteered as a firefighter.

During his tenure as chief, Bothwell supervised thousands of fire calls; worked with colleagues to design and implement a fire reporting system to track emergency calls, training records and all other activities involving the ATFD; and has been part of the department’s accreditation process.

Bothwell has enjoyed working with an enthusiastic and dedicated group of volunteers, who are excited to serve the community and are prepared for whatever comes. In his fellow firefighters, Bothwell has gained solid friendships and fond memories.

“There is a great deal of camaraderie and team work among the volunteers,” he said.

Bothwell has not fully retired from the company, as he will continue to volunteer as an assistant chief.

Bothwell had kind words for his successor, stating that Jones will continue to lead the company in a positive direction through his excellent management skills and ability to unify members.

“Michael will be an exceptional chief and a great leader for Abington Fire Company,” Bothwell added.

“John has led the Abington Fire Company well over the past two decades and continues to be a fantastic community servant,” Jones said of his predecessor. “We can gain a lot from his comprehensive insight.”

During the Board of Commissioners meeting, Chris Bors was also sworn in as the new chief of McKinley Fire Company.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve the community and be there when they need our assistance,” Bors added.
