Traffic Safety Grants Coming To 2 Eastern Montco Towns

State Rep. Ben Sanchez said Abington and Upper Dublin townships will receive state funding for transportation improvements.

ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — Two eastern Montgomery County communities will receive over $1 million in state grants for traffic safety and transportation improvements, State Rep. Ben Sanchez said.

The funding was awarded to Abington Township and Upper Dublin Township through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Automated Red-Light Enforcement Program.

“These investments will make our roads and intersections safer and more accessible for everyone who uses them — drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and residents with disabilities,” Sanchez said. “I’m proud to see state funding being invested in our communities for projects that improve quality of life and reduce the risk of serious accidents.”

Abington Township will receive $514,633 to enhance pedestrian and traffic safety at four high-traffic intersections: Easton Road and Fairhill Avenue, Easton Road and Parkdale Avenue, Edge Hill Road and Keith Road, and Jenkintown Road and Evergreen Road.

The project includes the installation of high-visibility crosswalks, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, ADA accessibility improvements, and upgraded signage.

The Upper Dublin Township Municipal Authority will receive $500,000 to extend the Cross County Trail along Virginia Drive and Dreshertown Road and to widen the roadway from Susquehanna Road to the Beacon Hill Road/Bantry Drive signalized intersection, improving safety, mobility, and connectivity for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Local officials said that the funding will allow long-planned safety and mobility projects to move forward while reducing the burden on local taxpayers.

“On behalf of the township and the entire board of commissioners, we express our sincere appreciation to Rep. Ben Sanchez for his instrumental support in advancing our grant application,” Abington Township Manager Christopher Christman said. “Securing this funding allows the township to move forward with essential safety upgrades at four priority intersections in the township, while preserving local tax dollars."

Members of the Abington Township Board of Commissioners emphasized the importance of pedestrian safety and walkability across the community.

“Abington Township is committed to making our neighborhoods safer for pedestrians,” Matthew Vahey, vice president of the Abington Township Board of Commissioners, said. “We are grateful for the support of Rep. Sanchez and the leadership of the Shapiro administration for this extraordinary investment in our community.”

Upper Dublin Township officials noted that the funding will advance regional trail connectivity while addressing safety concerns along a key transportation corridor.

“We’re grateful for Rep. Sanchez’s continued support of Upper Dublin Township and the Municipal Authority’s work to expand bicycle and pedestrian trail options through the Cross County Circuit Trail,” Upper Dublin Manager Kurt Ferguson said. “This funding is also an important step toward improving safety along the Virginia Drive and Dreshertown Road corridor, including the intersection at Limekiln Pike.”

The grants are part of PennDOT’s latest ARLE funding announcement, which invests more than $27 million in 51 safety projects across 44 municipalities statewide. Since 2023, the Shapiro administration has committed more than $60 million through the ARLE program to support 121 safety projects across Pennsylvania.

The ARLE program is funded through fines collected from red-light camera enforcement and is designed to improve safety at signalized intersections where data shows red-light running has been a problem. The program uses automated camera technology to enforce existing traffic safety laws, helping reduce dangerous behavior at intersections and improve safety for all road users.

Sanchez represents the 153rd Legislative District, which includes Rockledge and parts of Abington and Upper Dublin in Montgomery County.
