18 PA Hospitals Among Top 250 In New National Rankings

Hundreds of thousands of lives could have been saved if more hospitals behaved like the top 250, health experts said.

PENNSYLVANIA — New rankings from healthcare watchdog Healthgrades placed 18 Pennsylvania hospitals in the top 250 in the United States. Four of them made the top 50.

Healthgrades — which provides info on doctors, hospitals and health care providers — unveiled its "2023 America’s Best Hospitals Awards" on Tuesday. The honors include rankings in the top 50, 100 and 250 in the nation, along with state rankings across different specialties.

The list represents 5 percent of U.S. hospitals. If all hospitals performed similarly to the top 250, 160,615 lives could have been saved, according to Healthgrades.

"By giving consumers an easy-to-understand, data-driven way to identify the hospitals in their area with the best outcomes, Healthgrades is helping all patients — no matter their background — confidently choose higher quality care."

Lancaster General, Reading, Chester County, and Lankenau hospitals all made the top 50.

Health equity and social determinants — such as housing, food insecurity, transportation and interpersonal safety — significantly impact health outcomes, Healthgrades notes. The website plans to incorporate health-equity data into its methodology by the end of this year.
