PA State Trooper Megan Ammerman said the road was closed for nearly four hours as cleanup commenced.

While the road was shut down, buses came in to ferry the injured and stranded away to transportation and shelter. The nearby New Cumberland Fire Department served as a "warming and reunification location" for crash victims.

While it's not clear exactly what vehicle sparked the crash, officials pointed to the flash freeze on Saturday as temperatures dropped rapidly from the 50s into the 30s. Rain turned swiftly to snow, and road conditions in some areas became treacherous.

The crash drew national media attention, cited by outlets like The Today Show for its sheer scope.

No one was killed in the crash, authorities said.

PA State Police and the New Cumberland Fire Department were joined by PennDOT and numerous local EMS, police, and fire departments in responding to the scene.
