Bala Coffee Shop Offering Election Day Special: 'Make America Cake Again'

One Bala Cynwyd eatery is bringing the "Make America Cake Again" national movement to Pennsylvania.

Trail's End Cafe in Bala Cynwyd is offering an Election Day special as they participate in the national "Make America Cake Again" offering: a slice of election cake and a cup of coffee for $5.

According to organizers, the non-partisan initiative is aimed at raising awareness about American culinary heritage and how important food has been historically to the political process.

“When we heard about this project it seemed like a natural fit for Trail’s
End Café," said owner Tracy Katz. "We immediately contacted our bakery, High Point, and asked how we could collaborate. Trail’s End Café opened in May to create a community coffee house where our neighbors gather to work, relax, and socialize. Having the opportunity to vote is worth celebrating, and what better way than with cake, coffee, and community?"

In colonial times, Election Cake was prepared for town hall meetings and community celebrations. Its aim was to encourage eligible voters to attend.

The modern incarnation of the movement, Make America Cake Again, was launched by OWL Bakery in Asheville, North Carolina.

Trail's End will donate 10 percent of sales to the League of Women Voters Philadelphia Chapter, Katz said. The League is a non-partisan and non-profit group that works to encourage voter access and education.
