City Avenue Closures To Affect Lower Merion Saturday, Next Week

PennDOT's $2.9 million traffic and safety improvement project begins.

PennDOT's $2.9 million safety improvement project is slowly getting underway and the effects will be felt starting Saturday in Lower Merion Township and Philadelphia, PennDOT said Wednesday.

City Avenue/U.S. Route 1 in Lower Merion and Philadelphia will have lane closures with single-lane traffic patterns intermittently, according to PennDOT.

The schedule for work and restrictions on City Avenue/U.S. 1 is as follows:

  • Saturday, Oct. 8, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., between Wynnewood Road and 63rd Street;
  • Monday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., between Wynnewood Road and 63rd Street;
  • Tuesday, Oct. 11, and Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., between Merion Road/Drexel Road and 63rd Street;
  • Thursday, Oct. 13 and Friday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., between Cardinal Avenue and 59th Street/Raynham Road.

The work is part of a project to improve travel and safety on a three-mile section of City Avenue/U.S. 1 between Interstate 76 and Lancaster Avenue/U.S. Route 30, by installing adaptive traffic signals to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety along the corridor.

The project is scheduled to finish in November 2017, PennDOT said.

Project contractor Armor & Sons Electric Inc., of Langhorne, will upgrade and fully modernize 17 signalized intersections along City Avenue/U.S. with a new wireless communication system to better accommodate traffic flow. The improvements also include the installation of new pedestrian push buttons, traffic signal heads, pavement markings, overhead street signs, and 74 new ADA curb ramps, According to Pen DOT.

Armor & Sons Electric Inc., will also perform various other roadway improvements on U.S. 1 (City Avenue), including a new left turn and lane configurations at Cardinal Avenue to improve traffic and safety at that intersection, PennDOT said.

The $2,895,674 project is funded in full by federal monies, PennDOT said.
