Lower Merion To Host Hazardous Waste Recycling Event

Pesticides, antifreeze, gasoline, oil, kerosene, and much more: make sure you recycle these items at the upcoming Lower Merion event.

LOWER MERION, PA – A Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Event will be held at the Lower Merion Transfer Station on Sunday, October 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The station is located on 1300 N. Woodbine Avenue in Penn Valley.

Free residential collection events are held outdoors rain or shine.

Toxic and flammable household chemicals are collected for proper disposal. According to the county, acceptable items include: gasoline, oil, kerosene, turpentine, paint thinner, oil paint, stains, varnish, pool chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, antifreeze, caustic cleaners and solvents, mercury, thermometers, flares, fire extinguishers, lead acid batteries, rechargeable batteries, fluorescent tube light bulbs, CFL bulbs, mini propane canisters, and electric oil filled heaters.

Containers can be returned upon request, organizers said.

You should not bring the following items: electronics, appliances, asbestos, explosives, ammunition, medical waste, radioactive waste, smoke detectors, items containing Freon, tires, or the following:

• Latex or Water-Based Paint is not hazardous and can be placed in the trash once it is dry. Air
dry latex paint or add absorbent material like kitty litter until paint becomes a solid.

• Alkaline Household Batteries are not hazardous and should be thrown in the trash.

• Prescription Medications should be disposed of in the secure drop boxes located in many
area police stations, a list of which can be found in the Recycling Guide

• Propane Tanks should be taken to locations listed in the Recycling Guide. Mini propane canisters are accepted at collections.

An earlier hazardous waste recycling event will be held on Saturday, September 17, at the Spring-Ford 9th Grade Center in Royersford on 400 South Lewis Road from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
