Chase and I Return to our Respective Positions. Coincidence?
A discussion of Chase Utley's return to the Phillies and my return to my blog. Also, something about pizza.
Chase Utley returned to the Fightins' lineup last night, from a knee injury. I've returned to my blog, from the eastern shore of Maryland, where I saw my cousin (a Bala Cynwydian) get married. Our homecomings have, no doubt, been wildly anticipated by the public.
Chase went 0-5, but the rest of the Phillies welcomed him back with a 14 hit outburst, including homeruns by Polanco, Rollins, and Ibanez. The fans welcomed him with this standing ovation.
I'm sure that when you watched the game, you thought to yourself, "I wonder which Phillie Isaac from the Narberth-Bala Cynwyd Patch blog was most impressed with?" I'll bet you couldn't sleep, such was the anxiety with which you anticipated the answer to that question. So here it is:

Chooch.
Ruiz was 3-3 with a walk. He's been slumping since his return from his back injury, and I believe that this was his first multi-hit game since his activation from the DL. I'm too lazy to verify that statistically, so you'll just have to rely on my semi-reliable memory. Chooch emerged as a real offensive contributor last season, and the Phils began to count on him for clutch hits. It's clear that if this year's weaker lineup is going to score runs, Ruiz has to produce. He's got to take walks, like he always has. And he's got to hit the ball to all fields, like he did last night. When you see Chooch wait back on the ball, and loop a ball to right field, it's a really good sign. If Chooch can hit and produce from the middle of the order like he did last night against the Reds, this offense is headed in the right direction.

Now for a small Bala Cynwyd-specific twist. If you want to maximize your enjoyment of Phillies baseball, I recommend barbecue-chicken pizza. This can be procured at Boston Style at Merion on Levering Mill, or at the brand new Tony Roni's on Montgomery Ave. Try them both. The two restaurants make different pies, but they're both great.
Stay tuned to this blog, as tomorrow I will have a ridiculously exciting piece on MLS fan support, which, believe it or not, relates directly to our little suburb.
