Lower Merion Libraries To Host College Possibilities Founder Rachel B. Sobel, Ph.D. for Seminars on College Planning for Students with Learning Differences

College Possibilities' Dr. Rachel B. Sobel presents a free three part lecture series, open to the public on three dates in October

This October, College Possibilities founder Rachel Sobel, Ph.D., will present her lecture series, “College Planning for Students with LearningDifferences,” at two Lower Merion libraries. Each lecture will focus on a different group oflearning differences.

Dr. Sobel will discuss how to approach the college search and application process for studentsfacing learning challenges, including Asperger’s and ADHD. In addition, she will outline thedifferences between high school and college in obtaining support.

“Given the unique needs of students with one or more diagnoses, finding the right support isessential to a student’s academic, social and emotional success,” explains Sobel.

Sobel is a licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Ph.D. in Counselor Education. She has morethan 30 years of experience working with adolescents and their families as a psychotherapist,college counselor and educator. Rachel’s background and experience provide her with a uniqueperspective on guiding families through this major life event, and particularly addressing the issues facing a student with learning challenges. Dr. Sobel typically visits colleges and theirdisability support staffs on average one week per month.

 Wednesday, October 10, 7:00-8:00 p.m.        Ludington Library, Bryn Mawr     College Planning for Students with Aspergers & ADHD             This session will focus on helping college-bound students and their parents understand how to assess and request programs and support targeted to the social needs of students withAsperger’s Disorder and/or ADHD.

Wednesday, October 17, 7:00-8:00 p.m.        Belmont Hills Library        College Planning for Students with Processing Disorders & Language-Based Differences                              Recognizing that students learn in a multitude of ways, this session will address how college-bound students with processing disorders and language-based learning differences canminimize feeling overwhelmed by learning how to craft college class schedules.

Wednesday, October 24, 7:00-8:00 p.m.      Belmont Hills Library      College Planning for Students with Medical & Psychiatric Diagnoses      Having a child with a medical or psychiatric diagnosis move away from home can be extremelydifficult for both the parents and the child. This session will discuss how to identify appropriatecollege campus staff that can assist with managing daily and emergency situations.
