History Discussion Group: "The Battle of the Crater: How Pennsylvania Miners almost Ended the Civil War 8 Months Early"--Tuesday, May 6 at 10 AM

Graphically portrayed in the opening scenes of the 2003 film Cold Mountain, The Battle of the Crater was meant to end the long Siege of Petersburg, Virginia.  Pennsylvania miners dug a mine shaft under Confederate lines which would be exploded, opening a hole in Confederate defenses.  Instead the battle was devastating for both the Union and Confederate sides. Learn about this historical battle and discuss, with local history buff Robert Bond.
