High School Quarterback Charged in Deadly Shooting: Report

The Clairton teen is the second suspect arrested following the death last week of Nathan Assad, 17.

BALDWIN, PA — A second teenager faces charges in a deadly shooting last week in Baldwin that took the life of another teen, according to the Allegheny County Police Department. Bryson Koontz, of Clairton, was arrested Wednesday on charges stemming from the shooting death of Nathan Assad, 17.

Koontz, also 17, was the quarterback of Clairton High School’s football team, according to online records, WTAE-TV Action News 4 reported. He's been charged as an adult with criminal homicide, robbery, conspiracy and weapons violations, and is being held in the Allegheny County Jail.

Nathan Lee, 16, of Baldwin Borough also is being held in the county jail on charges stemming from the shooting.

Assad died on the morning of Aug. 16 in a local trauma unit after being shot the previous evening following a robbery. Baldwin police and paramedics were dispatched to the intersection of Horning Road and Curry Road at about 8:15 p.m. after a 911 call and found Assad wounded in the passenger seat of a vehicle.

Police investigators said Koontz and Lee were in a car during a deal to buy marijuana from Assad. The investigators said Lee then robbed Assad, WTAE-TV reported.

After the robbery, Koontz tried to drive away, and Assad followed them as the passenger in another car. The police said Koontz gave Lee a gun to shoot at the car carrying Assad, and one of those bullets struck him.

Lee has been charged with criminal homicide, robbery, recklessly endangering another person and weapons violations.
