Pitt Moving To Online Instruction During Coronavirus Outbreak

Pittsburgh's largest university announced the move to online instruction Wednesday.

PITTSBURGH, PA - The University of Pittsburgh is canceling face-to-face classes and will transition to online instruction, university Chancellor Patrick Gallagher announced Wednesday.

The university is on spring break this week; it will be extended until March 23.

Gallagher asked students not to return to their dormitories if possible.

The university also is canceling all events exceeding 25 participants or that are deemed nonessential.

Pitt athletics will continue its practices and competitions.

The changes will be in effect through the end of the semester, Gallagher said.

"I realize that this is an unexpected and dramatic development," Gallagher said. "However,
based on what we currently know—and still don’t know—about the COVID-19 pandemic, I believe that these new steps are necessary to strike a prudent balance between protecting our community and continuing our academic mission."
