School Lane Charter School Students Build on FIRST Lego League Experience

Middle school students recently took part in their first competition after forming a new team.

Teamwork, science and technology are at the core of a new activity at School Lane Charter School (SLCS). Six students teamed up under the supervision of their computer science teacher to compete for the first time as part of the FIRST© Lego© League, a robotics program that welcomes more than 20,000 teams from more than 70 countries to annual competitions.

As part of a FIRST Lego League team, School Lane students garnered hands-on experience working with programming and engineering. The team, under the moniker “Robo Rookies,” traveled to a competition on Dec. 1 with a robot in tow, and the experience of competing alongside other teams in a day-long challenge. The event, divided into four sections, focused on project presentation, robot performance, technical design and programming and a challenge to come up with creative solutions that would benefit senior citizens. The FIRST Lego League teams are guided by Core Principles that focus on teamwork, friendly and fun competition, cooperative learning and problem solving.

“I was happy with how well our team worked together during the competition,” said Jessie Peterson, Computer Science Teacher at SLCS. “Our team maintained a really positive attitude and as it was our first competition, we really had a chance to see what it was all about.”

Peterson said that the focus now is on working to improve the team’s programming and engineering skills to gear up for the sole competition next fall. More students have expressed interest in joining the team and Peterson is exciting to begin working with the students to prepare for the future.
