Life-Saving Heroics Honored In Bensalem Twp.

BENSALEM TOWNSHIP, PA —The worker fell through the skylight roof of the Radisson Hotel six stories into the hotel's lobby.

Thanks to the efforts of Bensalem Township Fire Rescue, Bensalem Township EMS, and Bensalem Township Police, that worker might not be alive today.

The Bensalem Township Department of Public Safety recognized those township members along with Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital doctors Gerald Wydro and Alvin Wang for those life-saving efforts on Feb. 8.

"Their collective efforts to provide critical care and stabilize a patient who was impaled by a chair after falling 75 feet through a skylight at a local hotel saved a life," officials said during a presentation at the Bensalem Township Council's meeting on Monday night. "This type of teamwork by first responders exemplifies the importance of public safety professionals working together."

They were all presented citations by Public Safety Director William McVey, and honored by Mayor Joseph DiGirolamo, Bensalem Township Council, and Bensalem Command.

Bensalem Township Fire Rescue said the injured worker is currently recovering.

BTFR staff also recognized at the meeting were Battalion Fire Chief Robert Sponheimer, Fire Lt. Nick Altomare, FF/EMT Tom McCool, FF/EMT Tom Prociuk, FF/EMT Mike Sekulski, and firefighter Tim Resh.

Meanwhile, the Bensalem Police Department also recognized Officer Bryan Hearn as the 2023 Officer of the Year.

"Hearn had an outstanding year. His proactive police efforts resulted in 120 criminal arrests and recovered many guns, drugs, and stolen vehicles," officials said. "Most notably, he arrested two burglars and a homicide suspect."

Officials said that was done besides his regular patrol duties and responsibilities as a field training officer.
