U.S. 1 In Bensalem To Go To Single Lane Next Week

The nighttime lane closures will be to set up a new, long-term traffic pattern in the area expected to last two years during construction.

BENSALEM, PA — Part of U.S. 1 in Bensalem will be reduced to a single lane in both directions overnight next week as work widening and improving the highway continues.

The lane closures will be between Rockhill Road and Old Lincoln Highway. They'll be in place Monday, Feb. 4, through Friday, Feb. 8 from 8 p.m.-6 a.m.

The lane closures will be for work setting up a new, long-term traffic pattern in the area, PennDOT officials said. Crews will be doing line painting and installing temporary barriers that will separate southbound and northbound traffic during construction.

It's part of ongoing work to improve a 1.3-mile section of the highway in Bensalem.

The new pattern will create two through-lanes in both directions on U.S. 1, plus a right-turn lane for access to properties in the work zone. It will move all traffic to the west for about two years of construction on the northbound side of U.S. 1 and the ramps to and from Street Road (Rt. 132).

The project is the first of three construction contracts to rebuild and widen U.S. 1, replace aging bridges and install safety enhancements along a four-mile section of the expressway from just north of the City of Philadelphia to just north of Rt. 413 (Pine Street) in Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough.

Allan A. Myers, Inc., of Worcester in Montgomery County, is the general contractor on the $97 million project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. All work on this project is expected to complete by late 2022.
