Fellow students and faculty gave the Golden Hawks a good sendoff on Friday afternoon with a pep rally in the school’s gymnasium that featured cheers, prayer, a whole-school participation “Harlem Shake” and an inspirational talk from one of the great players from the school’s past.

“Out of all the memories being at Lafayette [College] and Bethlehem Catholic, this is the one that sticks out most in my mind,” said Tiffany Bedics Gallis, the Hawks’ all-time leading scorer with 1,807 points.

Bedics Gallis recalled being a part of the only other Bethlehem Catholic team to play for a state title. That was in 1993 and the Golden Hawks lost to Pittsburgh North Catholic.

“I’ll tell you what’s going to be different between what I did in Hershey and what you do is that you guys are going to come back with the state title,” Bedics Gallis said to a roar of cheers from the gymnasium’s bleachers.

A part of the pep rally was dedicated to honoring Kalista Walters who, with a 20-point performance in Monday’s state semi-final, passed the 1,000-point mark in her high school career. She’s a sophomore.

Bedics Gallis said she isn’t worried about Walters breaking her scoring record. She is rooting for her to do it.

“Records are made to be broken,” she said. “I hope you break it. I hope you shatter it.”

Then Bedics Gallis walked over to Walters and gave her a high-five.

The PIAA Class AAA girls basketball championship game between Bethlehem Catholic and South Park will be televised live on Service Electric’s TV2 and on PCN.
