Bravo Pizza: Large Selection and Fair Pricing

This week Patch reviews Bravo Pizza in Bryn Mawr.

When a pizza chain is called Bravo Pizza, the implication is that the food is worthy of praise. in Bryn Mawr isn't the most praise-worthy, but it offers a decent slice at a decent price.

Having been to numerous Bravo Pizzas, I can say that they always have a large selection of eats. It's a feast for the eyes as you look over the dozens of varieties of pizza, pasta dishes, salads and other choices. Rather than read the text of a menu, you can actually see your food. As they say, you eat with your eyes first, and Bravo Pizza caters to that.

I chose a slice of mushroom (one of my favorites) and a slice of veggie. The mushrooms were canned and slightly yellow, and the slice was traditional Neopolitan with a thinner crust. The sauce and mozzarella were fine. There was nothing too remarkable about the slice, but I did love the extra crisp crust. I could actually hear my teeth sinking into the crust when I took each bite. It's always satisfying to get multiple senses involved when you eat.

The veggie slice was loaded with vegetables. There were broccoli florets, mushrooms, green peppers, tomatoes, red onions and spinach. It was like a full day's serving of vegetables on top of my slice. This slice featured a thicker Sicilian style crust, which was crisp on the bottom and doughy on the inside. This heartier crust accommodated the abundant vegetables nicely. I wished for a touch more sauce and cheese, but I guess the lack of tons of cheese made for a healthier slice in general.

For dessert, I had a mini vanilla cannoli. I was so excited to try this diminutive Italian treat, but when I bit into it the fried cannoli shell was unbelievably soft. The filling was fairly tasty—sweet and creamy with a slight tang and dots of chocolate chips. It was a shame that the shell was disappointing. I think this cannoli could have been really good.

I washed it all down with an unsweetened iced tea. It was quite large and part of the two slice and drink special. Bravo Pizza is always having some sort of wallet-friendly special, so be on the look out.

The dining area is very large and long. It's fairly clean and well maintained. There are plenty of tables and booths so seating is never a problem. There's not much ambiance, and it has a school cafeteria feel to it. However, oddly enough there is a skylight between the food and dining areas. It was a big surprise seeing this glorious sunlight beaming down near the condiment and napkin counter.

The service is efficient and quick. I didn't have to wait long for my food, and items came out of the brick oven hot and toasty. The staff isn't very chatty, but they are helpful.

Bravo Pizza is not the best pizza you will find on the Main Line, but it's a decent slice at a good price. The two slice and drink special is still a bargain and in this economic climate that is nothing to scoff at. It's always nice to be able to see your food before you order it so you know exactly what you're getting. At the very least, the veggie slice is a tasty way to get the USDA daily suggestion of vegetables. They say that we need to eat more fruits and vegetables and fewer starches and proteins. The wide selection of pizzas, salads and pastas at Bravo Pizza allows for that to happen at an affordable price. Bravo for that!
