Rev. Frank Schaefer will preach at St. Luke United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 4th at 10 am. Mr. Schaefer was defrocked in November, 2013 because he performed a same-sex wedding for his son 6 years ago.
He will preach and assist in serving Holy Communion at the 10 am service. After worship there will be a time of refreshments and discussion, questions and answers with Mr. Schaefer.
Mr. Schaefer will also participate in discussion groups at 2 pm at Hope United Methodist Church in Havertown and at 5 pm at Ardmore United Methodist Church in Ardmore.
A jury of 12 United Methodist pastors originally suspended Mr. Schaefer for 30 days, inviting him to promise that he would adhere to the Discipline of the church and agree never to perform same-sex weddings again. Mr. Schaefer, who has 2 other gay children, said that he would not make that promise.
Since he was defrocked, Mr. Schaefer has been speaking at churches around the country. He has been offered a position in the California Annual Conference and Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington, DC welcomed him as a member of their church.
Mr. Schaefer has stated that he now considers his ministry to include all members of the LGBTQ community, and he plans to continue to advocate for change in church policies.
