10 Tips for the "Wall Flower"

The holidays are coming and it’s time to celebrate.   This means it is time to mix, mingle and make merry!  Sounds like a great time? Yes, it is for some folks.  But, there are a lot of us that still feel a little apprehensive walking into a room full of party goers.  Whether you are alone or a plus one, sometimes it can feel a little awkward.  Then, you become “The Wall Flower.”  While hanging out at that wall, have you noticed the guests that seem to be having a great time and working the room like they’re getting paid! Well, maybe some of them are –Lol.  But, the truth is, these individuals know the art using good social skills. Guess what? It’s not hard!  All you need is a great attitude, practice these tips and you can also be on your way to becoming socially savvy!

 

1.      Start before you leave the house! Make sure you are dressed appropriately for the event.  Be sure to check the dress code on the invite or call the host.  If these options aren’t available.  It is always better to be over dressed than under dressed.  Ladies, purchase a versatile LBD (little black dress) with a few tweaks, it works from work to a night on the town!

2.      Be on time.  Try to arrive within the first half hour of the event.  This will allow you time for parking and the opportunity to get good seating if available.

3.      Command the room when you enter.  Use good posture, hold your head high, chin down.  Have a pleasant look on your face.

4.      When you make eye contact with others Smile!  A smile conveys warmth and good vibes to others.

5.      Extend greetings to others, this includes the door person, coat check person, bartender, etc.

6.      Introduce yourself to others.  If you feel a little nervous, take a deep breath and just do it!  You will automatically appear confident. People gravitate to confidence!

7.      Strike up a conversation.  You already have something in common with everyone in the room, because you are all attending the same event.

8.      If food is being served, use good dining skills. Whether you are eating at the bar or a seated dinner,    

9.      Move around.  Do not stand or sit in one spot during the entire event.  This will allow you to interact with multiple people and check out your surroundings.

10.  Limit your cocktails!  Stay alert and aware! 

 

Using these tips get easier with practice.  So get ready to give up that wall space, Former Wall Flower!  Let’s get out and have fun!
