When Walt Bates, the owner of the Dublin Cheese Plant dies in a hunting accident, Ruth Hoch, the bookkeeper at the plant and sometime thespian, suspects foul play. Cast as Joan of Arc in a production of Saint Joan directed by big-time out of town director Boyd Middleton (who has secrets of his own), Ruth starts to embody Joan in her one-woman search for the truth. She suspects Earl Hill, the dairy inspector at the Plant, but soon also suspects James Bates, Walts son, an adulterous lawyer with political aspirations. Standing in Ruths way, however, are the powerful preacher Reverend Bobby Groves and his fundamentalist congregation, as well as Sharon Bates, Walts conflicted widow. In her search for the truth, Ruth may expose justice, or she may inadvertently rip the town apart at its seams.
Lanford Wilson’s Book of Days asks us to confront the question of what is right and what is just. The play forces us to look at the needs of the community versus the desire of the individual, and the consequences that can arise when one individual refuses to accept the will of the community. For Pulley & Buttonhole Theatre Company, Book of Days is the first play of a season in which we explore what it means to be an individual. How do we decide who we are, what we stand for, and when a thing is so important that we are willing to stand alone?
