Flourtown Cub Scouts Celebrate Pinewood Derby Wins

Pack 173 of Upper Dublin/Springfield Surges to Victory in the District Pinewood's Wolf and Webelo Divisions!

Cub Scout Pack 173 members swept the field with first, second and third place Wolf Division wins in the grand finale of this year’s annual Pinewood Derby, held on Feb. 21 at the First Presbyterian Church of Flourtown. The first place Webelos Division win also went to Pack 173.

All fourteen Cub Scout Packs in the Baden-Powell District, which includes public and private schools in the Colonial, Springfield, Upper Dublin and Wissahickon Districts, participated in Pinewood this year. Each pack consists of several Dens: Tigers for first grade boys, Wolves for second graders, Bears for third graders, and Webelos for fourth and fifth graders (10 year olds), who then cross over at age 11 to Boy Scouts.

Begun in 1953, the Pinewood Derby has steadily grown in popularity among Cub Scouts throughout the country. It is always an exciting competition to see who can build the fastest race car from just a block of wood, four plastic wheels and four nails. Each boy (and his family) works to engineer the zootiest, zippiest piece of automotive greased lightening possible! Winning a prize here is indeed a memorable achievement.
