PHILADELPHIA – The Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW) is inviting the public to join them during the Martin Luther King J. Day of Service at the Thomas Mansion in Germantown.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, FOW and members of the public will be partaking on an ongoing grounds work project at the historic Thomas Mansion, 6245 Wissahickon Ave. in Germantown.

"By volunteering at Thomas Mansion, we will be giving back to our park, it’s users, and the plants and animals that rely on it to live," Maura McCarthy, FOW’s executive director, said.

Thomas Mansion was built in 1869 by George Clifford Thomas and his wife Caroline Sheetz.

The property, which once featured landscaped gardens and a green house, needs plenty of regular maintenance to keep from becoming overgrown, the FOW said.

For the third consecutive MLK service day, FOW is seeking volunteers to help clear overgrown invasive plants along the mansion’s driveway.

Interested volunteers can register for the event online here.
