Human Case of West Nile Found in Philly

This marks the 20th human diagnosis of West Nile in 2012.

A Philadelphia person tested positive for the West Nile virus on Sept. 12, according to the Pennsylvania West Nile Virus Control Program.

The unknown individual represents the 20th case of human West Nile diagnosed this summer.

State and county officials refuse to say where in Philadelphia the person is from, citing health information privacy, or HIPAA.

Symptoms

People can have a mild case of West Nile and not realize it. Mild symptoms, according to the Pennsylvania West Nile Virus Control Program, include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Body Aches
  • Occasional Skin Rash
  • Occasional Swollen Lymph Glands

More severe symptoms include:

  • Headache
  • High Fever
  • Neck Stiffness
  • Stupor
  • Disorientation
  • Coma
  • Tremors
  • Convulsions
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Paralysis
