12:45-1:45pm Drama of a Song (No Singing required)
We begin with a brief discussion about Musical Theater and Opera as Art forms. Talk about how even though opera is sung in different languages the message is conveyed by the Artists actions, staging and emphasis of the lyrics while being sung. Students will then use popular song lyrics to work up small scenes that will be presented during the showcase at the end of the day. Students will examine the different aspects of the song they have been assigned and the message it is conveying in order to present it as a dramatic/comedic scene. Character development and line interpretation skills will be exercised, as well as staging skills to keep the message of the song complete and successfully conveyed to the audience.
1:45-2:15pm Break/Snack Provided
2:15-3:30pm Staging Silverstein (Ages 10-14)
This workshop is about working with alternative texts, like poems and popular stories to present them in a theatrical way while still conveying the prime message or intent of the original text. We will start with readings, using different voices and characterizations, of the poems by Shel Silverstein to be used in the final presentations during the showcase at the end of the day. Then Students will break into pairs or small groups to work on blocking, division of text and characterizations for feedback and critique. This workshop will exercise directing skills, acting skills, script interpretation skills and overall performance skills.
2:15-3:30pm Doth the Force Be With You (Ages 13-17)
Does modern Sci-fi and Shakespeare really blend when it comes to performance and translation to stage? The Workshop begins with a brief discussion about Genres in storytelling and playwriting. Then we will use some Shakespearean lines to play some modern theater games so the performers get used to the style of the text. Then the class will split into pairs or small groups and use script text from Ian Doescher’s critically acclaimed William Shakespeare’s Star Wars Trilogy- that blends our favorite Sci-Fi Story with Elizabethan England. They will stage the scenes with basic blocking, dramatic emphasis, and present them during the showcase at the end of the day.
